Activities

Prepare for the Journey: See what pioneers packed for their new lives in the West.

Travel the Trail: Partake in a western prairie walk and learn about the many native plants and animals pioneers encountered in their daily lives.

Setting Up Camp: Students will participate in common chores of children in the 1800s by “hunting” wild buffalo with bean bags, making butter, and grinding coffee.

Native American Life: Learn about some of the cultures and people who already inhabited the West.

Gold Panning: Pan for gold just like the ‘59ers—your students, however, are guaranteed success!

Pioneer Games: After months of hard living on the trail, children were eager to play games once they reached their destination. Students will play games such as Drop the Handkerchief, Tug-O-War, and test their balancing skills on our stilts!

All Westward Ho! activities are led by Four Mile Historic Park Staff and Volunteers.
